Wasting no time to attend to his people’s needs, the newly inaugurated chairman of Akko Local Government, Hon. Muhammad Danladi Adamu, has swiftly moved to address the persistent water challenges in the LGA in complement of Governor Inuwa’s ongoing initiative to provide water security for all citizens of Gombe State.
Speaking to the press over the weekend, the Chairman said that upon assuming duty, he immediately constituted a committee comprising all stakeholders to propose solutions to the lingering water scarcity, especially in the local government headquarters, to provide relief to residents.
“When we came in, we found that water, which is one of the basic needs for human life, was lacking in Kumo. The existing water supply system had not been functioning for quite a long time and our water tank was also not in good shape. The people were suffering owing to the current heatwave and the delayed arrival of the rainy season,” he said.
“We gave the necessary funding, facilitated necessary technical amendments, and just the following day, water was restored in Kumo – about seven areas in the town received water,” he stated.
While acknowledging this initial success, Hon. Danladi Adamu expressed his determination to reinvigorate the existing scheme with alternative sources.
“In addition to the existing water scheme utilizing underground sources along Billiri Road, another scheme exists to the east of town near Dutsen Amina, developed by our esteemed representative in the National Assembly, Honorable Usman Bello Kumo. We aim to integrate these two schemes to consolidate and enhance the overall capacity and efficiency of Kumo’s water supply system,” he explained.
“We equally plan to sink industrial solar-powered boreholes, especially in areas that are not covered by the current distribution system, to supplement the supply and bring relief to our people,” the Chairman added.
Speaking on specific measures to ensure sustainability, the Chairman said they plan to “use a quality water piping system to revitilise he piping system that conveys water from the main source to the major reservoir”.
“We will ensure proper power supply from the national grid,” he continued. “We will make sure the transformer capacity can provide the needed power, and we will look at possibilities of providing an alternative reliable power source for effective and efficient supply.”
Hon. Danladi unveiled plans to expand the coverage of the current distribution system to reach places that are not yet covered.
“We will join hands with the state ministry of water resources and the Water Board, with the support of His Excellency the Governor, to extend the coverage,” he said.
“We also intend to lay pipelines along roads that are currently being constructed by Hon. Kumo and those planned by Governor Inuwa Yahaya, which are about 10 kilometers long, to take water directly to people’s doorsteps,” he added.
The Chairman commended Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s efforts in sending a team of consultants who recently visited many places in Akko LGA, including Wuro Dole, Lawanti, and Akko Gari, with a view to providing functional water supply in these areas.
He added that his administration would also assess how to improve the existing water supply system in Pindiga for increased efficiency and effectiveness.
He called on people to safeguard the water facilities, pay their water bills, and support government policies and programs for continued provision of social services in the LGA, assuring that his administration would never rest on it’s oars in delivering dividends of democracy to the common man.
