The National Union of Bauchi State Students (NUBASS) has applauded Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed for what it described as “historic and life-changing” scholarship disbursement to indigene of the state studying in various tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
Speaking at a press conference in Bauchi, the NUBASS National President, Comrade Bello Ibrahim Aliyu, said the governor had shown unprecedented commitment to education by approving ₦945.2 million for students support.
“So far, ₦800 million has already been released, with 19,546 verified beneficiaries receiving ₦801.2 million across 154 tertiary institutions nationwide. This is not just a payment; it is a profound statement of commitment to the education and empowerment of our youths”, Aliyu disclosed.
He stressed that the intervention had restored the confidence of students in government, after years of uncertainty over scholarship payments.
“For too long, scholarship payment had become a matter of doubt, delay, and disappointment. But today, under the compassionate leadership of Governor Bala Mohammed, it has become a source of renewed trust and hope,” he said.
Beyond scholarship, Aliyu highlighted other efforts by the state government and NUBASS to support students. He cited the recent sponsorship of 100 Bauchi indigenes to study in China, describing them as “global ambassadors of the state” who would return with knowledge and innovation.
“His Excellency has written his name in gold in the history of Bauchi State education,” Aliyu said.
On security, the NUBASS president noted that rising cases of insecurity around some campuses had prompted the union to engage security agencies. According to him, the Bauchi Police Command has approved the establishment of a police station at Wuntin Dada to protect Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAP) and nearby communities, alongside other patrol and surveillance measures.
“This is not a minor achievement; it is a turning point,” Aliyu stressed.
Other milestones recorded under the current NUBASS leadership include the renovation of the union’s secretariat, distribution of free JAMB registration pins to indigent students, and the hosting of the maiden EDUTECH Conference, which brought together policymakers, innovators, and students to chart the future of education in the digital era.
Aliyu used the occasion to appreciate his executives, aides, and the student body for their support.
He said “To the resilient students of Bauchi State: you are the reason we lead, the energy that drives us, and the hope that sustains us. The journey continues, and the future of Bauchi State students is bright.”
