Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has initiated the payment of gratuity backlogs to 2,204 state retirees, underscoring his administration’s commitment to the welfare of both active and retired civil servants.
At a ceremony held at the Gombe Government House, Governor Yahaya highlighted that he inherited a daunting gratuity debt exceeding ₦21 billion upon assuming office in 2019.
Since then, his administration has diligently cleared a substantial ₦17.2 billion, including a recent disbursement of ₦4.2 billion to retirees from 2019 and 2020.
To ensure equitable distribution and fiscal responsibility, the Governor outlined a phased payment plan for local government retirees, aligning disbursements with each local government’s financial capacity.
Governor Yahaya further emphasized the ongoing reforms undertaken by his administration to enhance public service delivery. These initiatives include the establishment of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, the implementation of biometric attendance systems, and the rationalization of ministries to improve efficiency and accountability.
In a symbolic gesture, the Governor, joined by his Deputy and the Emir of Gombe, presented cheques to eighteen retirees – ten from 2019 and eight from 2020 – as a symbolic representation of the broader payment initiative.

Similarly, Barrister Aliyu Doho, representing the retirees, expressed gratitude to the Governor for prioritizing their well-being and addressing the long-standing issue of unpaid gratuities.
