The Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, has called on the Federal Government to take immediate actions to address illegal mining in Nigeria.
In a condolence message he personally signed to commiserate with the victims of Zamfara mining pit collapse, the former minister described the incident as tragic that calls for immediate attention.
“We received with unimaginable sadness the tragic news of the mining pit collapse few days ago, in Kadauri village, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
This tragedy, like many others before it, further underscores the urgent need for decisive action to address the pervasive illegal and unsafe mining activities that continue to endanger innocent lives trying to eke out a living across several parts of our country. While mining remains a source of livelihood for many, the dangers posed by unregulated and illegal practices cannot be ignored.
We, therefore, call on the government and all relevant authorities to strengthen security around mining communities, enforce strict and developmental regulations, and ensure that safety standards are fully adhered to. Equally important is providing viable alternative livelihoods for our youths, so they are not compelled to risk their lives in unsafe mining pits.”
Professor Pantami equally condoled with the victims family, government and people of Zamfara State.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to the bereaved families, the people of Zamfara State, and indeed all Nigerians touched by this unfortunate incident. We pray that Almighty Allah forgives the shortcomings of the departed, grants them Jannatul Firdaus, and gives their families the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. To the injured, we wish them a speedy recovery.”
Official figures reported that the tragedy has resulted into the loss of at least 13 people while scores others missing. Eyewitness told newsmen that there were over 100 people in the pit before the collapse.
