The Gombe State Chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has raised alarm over what it describes as a calculated and malicious plot to destabilize the party’s ongoing reforms, allegedly led by its suspended former caretaker chairman, Comrade Adamu Modibbo, in collaboration with elements linked to a controversial group known as the Gombe State Coalition.
This revelation was made public during a press conference held on Monday morning at Kaduna Hall in Tumfure, Gombe, where party executives addressed journalists and stakeholders over what they termed “an orchestrated attempt to discredit the party’s Acting National Chairman, Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar.”
According to the SDP Publicity Secretary in Gombe State, Usman Yahaya (popularly known as Raban Degri), the party is undergoing a period of “critical reformation and restructuring,” following the recent suspension of certain national officers over allegations of financial mismanagement, constitutional violations, and anti-party conduct.
In the midst of this reform process, Yahaya stated, “We have received credible intelligence that Comrade Adamu Modibbo, a suspended former caretaker chairman, is at the center of a sponsored plot to issue a fake suspension of our Acting National Chairman, Dr. Abubakar, who hails from this state.”
He alleged that Modibbo and his associates are working in concert with unnamed sponsors and political actors to sow discord within the party, with the aim of undermining the reforms currently being driven by Dr. Abubakar.
“The plan is simple: create confusion, spread false narratives, and attempt to derail our rebuilding efforts. But we will not be distracted,” Yahaya said firmly.
He added that the party remains fully behind Dr. Abubakar, describing him as a “resolute and constitutionally grounded leader” committed to repositioning the SDP as a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political space.
The statement also drew a sharp line between the party and the so-called Gombe State Coalition Group, emphasizing that the SDP has no affiliation or alliance with the group and will not tolerate attempts to use the party’s name to legitimize its activities.
“Anyone wishing to join that group is free to do so—but not under the banner of the SDP. Our stand is clear: we are not part of the coalition,” Yahaya declared.
In a stern warning, the party called on security agencies and the general public to be vigilant, stating that Modibbo and his “sponsors” are not recognized members of the SDP and should refrain from actions capable of breaching party discipline or public order.
The press conference concluded with a call for party unity, urging members and supporters to remain calm and focused as the SDP forges ahead in its internal restructuring and preparations for future elections.
The development adds to growing tensions within the SDP, which has been grappling with leadership and ideological battles in the buildup to the 2027 general elections.
