The killing of a Mass Communication student of Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi, has sparked outrage among the students community, with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), JCC Bauchi Axis, demanding urgent security interventions in off-campus areas.
The victim, identified as Samuel Nbami, was attacked and killed by suspected armed robbers in the Wunti Dada Community on Thursday, an area largely populated by students of the institution.
At a press briefing in Bauchi, the Executive Chairman of NANS JCC Bauchi Axis, Senator Ibrahim Salihu Maigoro, called for the immediate formation of a community vigilante group to work with security agencies, student leaders, and the polytechnic management to protect students.
“The safety of students cannot be left to chance. We are demanding concrete measures, not just promises. A vigilante structure must be activated immediately to secure Wunti Dada and other student communities,” Maigoro declared.
NANS also pressed landlords in student-populated areas to adopt strict tenant verification systems, insisting that unchecked influx of strangers has created loopholes exploited by criminals.
The association, however, maintained that security is a collective responsibility, urging the Nigerian Police Force to step up patrols and ensure the killers of Nbami are tracked and prosecuted.
“We will not fold our arms while our colleagues are being murdered. Samuel’s death must mark a turning point in how students security is handled in Bauchi,” Maigoro added.
NANS further appealed to students to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with security agencies, stressing that vigilance and timely reporting of suspicious activity could help prevent future tragedies.
The polytechnic management, during an emergency meeting with NANS, emphasized that there was sufficient hostel space within campus and encouraged students to relocate into the official accommodation for their safety.
