ATBU Emerges Top at North-East NUGA Games with 34 Gold, 14 Silver Medals

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi (ATBU) has emerged as the top-performing university at the North-East NUGA qualifying games competitions, held at Gombe State University from September 24 to 27, 2025.

 

The ATBU team won an impressive 34 gold medals and 14 silver medals, outperforming 10 other universities from Zone M, including Saadu Zungur University Gadau, Federal University of Health Sciences Azare, and University of Maiduguri, among others.

 

The university’s athletes excelled in various events, including athletics, taekwondo, chess, judo, table tennis, boxing, badminton, and beach volleyball.

 

This was contained in a statement signed by Director Information and Public Relations of the University, Mallam Zailani Bappah and made available to newsmen in Bauchi.

 

According to the statement, ATBU’s female athletes dominated the table tennis events, winning gold medals in singles, doubles, and team categories.

 

The Vice Chancellor, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Professor Ibrahim Hassan Garba, congratulated the team on their outstanding performance and promised of his continues support to the Team ATBU to maintain the institution’s pride in Nigerian university sports competitions.

 

The ATBU team’s remarkable achievement has set them up for a strong showing at the national NUGA games.

 

The university’s sports director, Alhaji Yahaya Abdulkarim, attributed the team’s success to rigorous training and dedication.
