The Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) Federal University of Kashere has joined its counterparts across the country on a peaceful protest, calling the attention of Federal Government to meet certain demands.
The Peaceful Protest kicked started from its Secretariat down to the Chancellery Building and ended at the main get of the University.
Addressing members during the protest, the Chairperson of ASUU FUK Chapter Dr. Shehu El-Rasheed explained that, the protest was a part of the resolution by the national executive committee to press home its demands which led to 2022 eight months strike and are still unmet till date leading to numerous challenges faced by university staff.
As captured on some placards, ASUU urged Federal Government to pay them 25% and 35% arrears, three and half months with-held salaries, implementation of Yayale Ahmed renegotiation agreement, and give ASUU enhanced salary not loans among other demands.
The university staff maintained that their salaries have remained stagnant for over sixteen years with the government dribbling with their intelligence, even though the renegotiation agreement was submitted since February 2025.
Dr Shehu emphasized that, “ASUU cannot guarantee Federal Government an industrial harmony when our demands are not met”.
Commenting on an interview during the protest, a member of the union, Dr Muhammad Sheriff Ramadan, lamented that university staff are finding it difficult to discharge their responsibilities due to poor remuneration, thereby forcing lecturers to look for alternative sources of income to augment the meagre salary.
He advised government to make the academic staff salaries more attractive as lecturers are very passionate to give out their best.
Some Mass Communication students interviewed to include: Dung Hannatu Yakubu and Precious Moses Ayomide expressed concerns on the ongoing disagreement between the Federal Government and ASUU, expressing fear that it could result to delay in academic calendars making students to spend extra years on campus.
