New NUJ President To Prioritize Journalists Welfare, Protection Of Rights

Gombe born Journalist, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi has been elected as the new National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

 

Announcing the results, the Chairman Credentials Committee, Comrade Uche Nwigwe, said Alhassan Yahaya has polled 436 votes to defeat his closest rival Comrade Dele Atumbi, who polled 97 votes, while Garba Muhammad got 39 votes.

 

The Chairman announced that, all the remaining positions were returned unopposed.

 

While speaking shortly after he was sworn-in, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, promised to promote unity among members, fight for the welfare of Journalists, uphold press freedom and ensure the protection of journalists rights.

He pledged to work closely with the government, stakeholders and other media organizations to advance the interest of journalists and the journalism profession in Nigeria.

 

Comrade Alhassan Yahaya who was the immediate past National Deputy President of the union, expressed his gratitude to his supporters and promised to lead the NUJ with integrity, transparency and accountability.

 

The new NUJ president called for support and cooperation of all members as he takes the responsibility of leading the union to greater heights.

 

He equally urged all the members to remain united and work together for the common goal of advancing the journalism profession in Nigeria.
