The recent announcement by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya regarding the implementation of the national minimum wage for local government staff, local education authority workers, and health personnel in Gombe State has sparked widespread reactions among citizens.
While the move appears commendable on the surface, many stakeholders remain skeptical due to the government’s past actions. It is on record that despite persistent appeals and pressure from labour unions and concerned leaders, the state government initially refused to fully implement the federally approved minimum wage across all sectors.
At one point, a ₦10,000 flat-rate increase was introduced across board. However, this relief was short-lived, as it was paid for only one month before being discontinued—raising serious concerns about the government’s consistency and commitment to workers’ welfare.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gombe State Chapter, notes that what was termed “full implementation” was in reality a selective and inconsistent approach, popularly referred to as the “Gombe Formula.” This system failed to meet the true standard of a comprehensive minimum wage structure as approved nationally.
Furthermore, the PDP observes that critical sectors such as tertiary institutions, secondary healthcare services, and other categories of state workers have been excluded from this so-called implementation, thereby creating inequality within the public service.
The sudden shift in the government’s stance has been widely interpreted as politically motivated, especially with increasing political activities ahead of future elections.
However, it must be clearly stated that fulfilling workers’ rights is a duty—not a political favor or campaign strategy.
The PDP firmly believes that:
* Minimum wage implementation must be uniform and inclusive across all sectors.
* Workers’ welfare should never be used as a political tool.
* Every citizen deserves the freedom to exercise their civic rights without economic pressure or manipulation.
In conclusion, the people of Gombe State are watching closely. For many, “seeing is believing,” and only consistent, transparent, and full implementation will restore confidence.
