Alhaji Muhammadu Abdullahi, popularly known as Baba Gombi and Sarkin Bakan Gombi, a legendary hunters’ commander and key figure in Nigeria’s community-based security architecture, has died at the age of 100.
His death signals the close of a remarkable chapter in grassroots resistance against insurgency, particularly in the North-East, where he became a symbol of bravery, resilience and local leadership in the fight against violent extremism.
Widely respected for his fearlessness, Baba Gombi devoted over five decades to confronting Boko Haram insurgents, kidnappers and bandits.
At a time when insecurity overwhelmed many rural communities, he mobilised and coordinated local hunters to complement the efforts of the military and other security agencies.
Born in 1926 in Bama, Borno State, he later settled in Gombi, Adamawa State, in 1979. There, he began organising local hunters into a formidable community defence force to counter rising insecurity.
His prominence grew significantly in 2015 at the peak of the Boko Haram insurgency, when he led local fighters in support of military operations that helped reclaim Gombi and surrounding areas from insurgents.
His group played a crucial role in intelligence gathering and joint field operations.
Beyond combat, Baba Gombi was also known for leading high-risk rescue missions, venturing into forests to secure the release of abducted victims.
He later rose to become National President of the Hunters’ Association, where he championed stronger collaboration between traditional security outfits and formal institutions.
In recognition of his contributions, the late Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Aliyu Mustapha, conferred on him the traditional title of Sarkin Yakin Bindigan Arewa in 1987.
Renowned for his humility, discipline and unwavering patriotism, Baba Gombi is survived by four wives, 36 children, 56 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Tributes have continued to pour in, with the Gombe State Chairman of the Hunters’ Association, Rabi’u Baushe, describing his death as a monumental loss and praising his enduring legacy of sacrifice and service.
As Nigeria reflects on his life and times, Baba Gombi remains a towering figure whose contributions underscore the vital role of community leadership in promoting peace and security.
