Posted on March 17, 2026 by Jtimes

In a continued effort to ensure proper sanitation and hygiene for displaced persons, the Gombe State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) has commenced the construction of additional toilet facilities at the temporary camp in Kashere, Akko Local Government Area.

A press statement signed and made available to Jewel Times by Abubakar Mohammed Tukur, said “The camp currently provides shelter for over 7,000 individuals displaced by a bandit attacks in February 2026, who fled their communities in the Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State”.

This new initiative builds upon the Agency’s ongoing interventions at the camp, which have included the distribution of sanitation and hygiene kits, regular environmental sanitation exercises, and sensitization campaigns on the dangers of open defecation and the importance of proper handwashing.

Flagging off the construction, the General Manager of RUWASSA, Engineer Mohammed Ahmed Gibirimo, represented by the Chief Administrative Officer, Adamu Abdulkadir Buji, stated that the project underscores the Gombe State Government’s commitment to the welfare of the IDPs.

He attributed the intervention to the concerns of the state Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, for the well-being of all those seeking refuge in the state.

“The Gombe State Government is committed to providing all basic necessities to ensure the displaced persons can live with a sense of relief and dignity,” Engr. Gibirimo said.

He further reiterated RUWASSA’s dedication to complementing the Governor’s efforts, assuring that the agency will remain readily available to support the IDP community.

Also commenting, the Camp Secretary, Dr. Babangida Bala, welcomed the initiative and assured the agency of the community’s full support for the smooth execution of the project.

He pledged that the beneficiaries would maintain the facilities to ensure their long-term sustainability.

Dr. Bala commended Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for the timely intervention and lauded RUWASSA for its tireless efforts in addressing the needs of the camp’s residents.
