The Centre for Gender Studies at Gombe State University has honoured the Maina Yuguda Foundation for its growing contribution to educational development through scholarship support for underserved students across Gombe State.
Officials say the intervention is help in expanding access to education in one of Nigeria’s less-developed regions.
Speaking at the centre’s inaugural advocacy lecture, the Director, Dr. Aisha Abubakar Kumo, said the Foundation’s support reflects the centre’s mission to promote inclusion, equality, and opportunities for vulnerable groups.
She noted that public understanding of “gender” remains clouded by misconceptions often influenced by foreign debates that do not reflect local realities.
“Many people associate gender with western concepts such as LGBT. That is not what we do. Our work is rooted in our religious and cultural values and focuses on supporting anyone who faces barriers to education or opportunity”, Kumo said.
She described the Maina Yuguda Foundation’s scholarship programme as a clear demonstration of gender equity in practice, enabling young people regardless of their background or financial situation to pursue higher education.
“This is what gender advocacy truly represents: ensuring that every young person has a fair chance,” she said.
During the event, the centre presented the Foundation with an award recognizing its continued commitment to students from low-income families.
Kumo noted that such interventions help reduce inequality and open pathways out of poverty for many households in Gombe State.
She also announced that the centre is forging new partnerships to equip students with digital skills, online business training, and Artificial Intelligence literacy.
“Plans are underway to support outstanding graduates from these programmes with seed funding to launch their initiatives”.
Kumo called on religious leaders, community groups, and philanthropists to emulate the Maina Yuguda Foundation by investing in education and social development.
“Strong partnerships are vital to expanding our reach and building more resilient communities,” she added.
The centre expressed optimism that the recognition will inspire more organisations to join efforts to promote education, empowerment, and social inclusion across the state.
