In a significant move to support the media community during the holy month of Ramadan, the Gombe State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has commenced the distribution of essential food items to its members across all 11 chapels.
The initiative, sponsored by the North East Development Commission (NEDC), aims to provide much-needed relief to media practitioners navigating the current economic climate while observing the Ramadan fast.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Chairman of the Gombe State NUJ, Faruk Muazu Gombe, lauded the NEDC for recognizing the vital role journalists play and the necessity of supporting them during these “challenging times.”
The Chairman highlighted that the distribution is a core part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to member welfare, ensuring that those who report the news are not forgotten in periods of communal need.
“We are immensely grateful to the NEDC for this generosity. This gesture is a testament to the importance of supporting journalists, especially during these challenging times. We assure the Commission of the NUJ’s continued partnership”, the chairman assured.
The NEDC’s involvement has been hailed as a stellar example of corporate social responsibility. Known for its wide-reaching interventions across the North East, the Commission’s decision to specifically target the press corps underscores a deep appreciation for the Fourth Estate.
The distribution reached all 11 chapels of the Gombe NUJ Council, targeting working journalists and union members to alleviate the burden of food costs during the Ramadan season.
