Gombe NUJ Hails Gov Yahaya Over Electricity Sector Reforms

Posted on January 11, 2026 by Jtimes

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Gombe State Council, has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, on the landmark achievement of securing regulatory autonomy for Gombe State’s electricity market.

A press statement signed and made available to Jewel Times by the State Chairman Faruk Mu’azu Gombe, said “This historic development, following the formal transfer of regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission (GOSERC), marks a transformative milestone in the state’s journey toward energy independence and economic empowerment” .

The NUJ commends the Governor’s visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to harnessing the opportunities presented by the amended constitution and the Electricity Act 2023.

By fulfilling all statutory requirements and proactively engaging with federal authorities, Gombe State has now joined the league of forward-thinking sub national governments taking charge of their intrastate electricity markets.

The union expressed optimism that the new development would usher in new economic prosperities into the state.

“This bold step not only decentralizes power sector governance but also positions Gombe to design locally responsive electricity tariffs, attract private sector investment, and accelerate access to reliable power for homes, businesses, and industries across the state.

The establishment of GOSERC and the forthcoming incorporation of JED SubCo signals a new era of tailored regulation, improved service delivery, and inclusive economic growth”.

The union assured the state government of its continuous support in ensuring stable power supply in the state.

“The NUJ Gombe State Council pledges its full support to the state government in this transition and urges all stakeholders—public and private—to collaborate in ensuring the success of this reform. We also call on GOSERC to uphold the highest standards of transparency, professionalism, and regulatory independence as it assumes its critical mandate.

As journalists, we remain committed to informing the public, fostering accountability, and amplifying the voices of citizens as Gombe embarks on this promising new chapter in its energy future”.
