Alhaji Aminu Haruna Abdullahi, the Senior District Head of Kwami and Ajiyan Gombe, has emphasized that upholding traditional values is key to preventing abuse and sexual assault in the community, particularly in a society where rape and the abuse of women have become alarmingly widespread.
He pointed out that the community’s shift from its traditional customs to the adoption of foreign cultural influences has led to significant setbacks, including a rise in abuse and rape, particularly among the youth.
Alhaji Aminu Abdullahi made these remarks during a visit by the Ministry of Women Affairs, in collaboration with various women’s groups, to his palace in Malam Sidi. The visit was part of the ongoing 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign to raise awareness and take action against the abuse of women and children.
The traditional leader noted that, as highlighted by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, research has shown that Gombe is one of the states with the highest rates of abuse, with 87% of women and children affected by violence. He expressed his deep concern over this troubling situation.
He further stressed that the erosion of traditional values, coupled with a disregard for Islamic teachings and Northern cultural norms, are significant contributors to the increasing rates of abuse and rape in the community.
As a traditional ruler, Alhaji Aminu Abdullahi pledged to work closely with other community leaders, including village heads and district heads, to address the rising incidence of abuse and rape, particularly among the youth and children.
Gombe State’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, Asma’u Muhammad Iganus, explained that the purpose of the visit was to seek the support of traditional rulers and community leaders in bolstering efforts to enforce legal penalties against perpetrators of rape and abuse.
She confirmed that a new law has been passed by the State Assembly to punish those found guilty of abusing women and children, irrespective of their status or position.
