The foresight and purposeful leadership of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has yielded a fruitful result. Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, Director-General of Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS), led a team to Gombe State Geographic Information Systems (GOGIS) to study their successful implementation of Digital Land Administration Reforms.
Dr. Sani, alongside management staff, was received by the Overseeing Director Planning, TPL. Aminu Abdullahi, who engaged them in discussions about GOGIS’s operations. These discussions covered the policy framework, technological infrastructure, and systems employed for digital land administration in Gombe State.
“For us in Kano, it started in 2012 but stopped due to lack of political will,” Dr. Sani explained. “When the government changed, the system suffered neglect again. They were not ready for it, thinking it was unimportant. Whereas, digital land administration can improve a state’s Internally Generated Revenue.”
“We are here today because there is political will from the Governor of Kano, Engr Abba Kabir Yusuf,” he continued. “He said ‘go to the best places like Gombe, Lagos, Kaduna etc to ensure that Kano State competes with global standards.'”
Gombe State Geographic Information Systems (GOGIS) has been recognized for its innovative approach to land administration, demonstrating significant reforms to digitize its land management processes. This has made the state more efficient, transparent, and accessible to the public.
Director General GOGIS, Dr Kabir Usman Hassan, stated that his office achieved this feat with the total support and cooperation of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya. The Governor put the necessary machinery in place to achieve the desired goals, making Gombe the best state Geographic Information System in Nigeria.
Dr. Hassan said the office applied state-of-the-art GIS technology, including advanced mapping tools and geospatial databases, for efficiency and accuracy in land administration. He also highlighted the challenges faced by GOGIS during implementation and shared best practices and lessons that KANGIS can apply.
After an interactive session, the KANGIS team expressed their appreciation for the support and guidance provided by GOGIS. They then conducted a tour of the agency’s infrastructure, including the service and customer care unit, to inspect the GIS infrastructure used in their operations.
Other members of the delegation included the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Land, Senior Reporter to the Governor on Land, Director ICT, Director Legal, Director SLTR, and Director GIS Operations.
