The Institute for Tourism Professionals of Nigeria (ITPN) has urged the federal and state governments to provide adequate support for the tourism industry, in order to attract private investors and stimulate growth.

Speaking at a one-day training workshop on Continuous Professional Development, held at the Senator Ali Wakili ASUP Secretariat of Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, ITPN National Vice President, Abdulhameed Muhammad Shariff, lamented that government agencies are collecting taxes from tourism industries without providing them adequate funding and support.

According to Shariff, government needs to change its narrative and provide an enabling environment for the tourism industry to thrive. He revealed that the industry provides job opportunities for many young Nigerians and is a significant source of revenue for the country.

Shariff highlighted the industry’s potentials, saying, “Tourism has the potential to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s GDP, create employment opportunities, and promote cultural exchange. However, it requires adequate support and investment to reach its full potential.”

In his remarks, ITPN North East Zone Chairman, Lukas Shehu Nelson, called for collaboration between stakeholders in the tourism industry and the government at all levels to develop the sector. “We need to work together to promote tourism in Nigeria and attract investors,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, Mallam Murtala Muhammad Alamai and Mrs. Esther Adebitan appreciated ITPN for organizing the workshop and promised to develop their career with the training for effective service delivery.

The workshop, attended by tourism professionals and stakeholders, aimed to promote continuous professional development in the tourism industry and address the challenges facing the sector.
