A Gombe-based trader, Bashir Abdullahi, has spent the past five years uncovering hidden treasures in bales of imported used clothes from Western countries. His unique trade, scouting and buying foreign currencies accidentally left behind in these clothes, has gained attention as both a lucrative and risky venture.
Speaking to our correspondent, Bashir explained how his journey into this unconventional business began.
“I am involved in the exchange business, however, it operates on a local level. I pay for forgotten currencies of travelers or expatriates who inadvertently left behind money in their used clothes. It’s indeed a worthwhile endeavor, as it has sustained me for more than five years.”
Bashir has built a network of middlemen and traders who inform him whenever new shipments of second-hand clothes arrive in markets across northern Nigeria. His work requires patience and a keen eye, as he meticulously inspects items for hidden cash or valuables.
While Bashir’s venture has brought him considerable profit over the years, it’s not without its challenges. The greatest risk lies in distinguishing genuine currency from counterfeit.
“This is indeed a blessing but with numerous challenges, because at many times I am at risk of buying fake notes. We are familiar with only a few foreign currencies such as the US Dollar, Euro, and Pound, so I found it challenging. However, I am determined to continue this endeavor,” he said.
Bashir’s success has inspired others in Gombe to explore creative ways to maximize profits from the thriving second-hand clothing industry. His story highlights the hidden opportunities in everyday business activities and the entrepreneurial spirit driving local traders.
